This website attempts to present the most accurate listing of every Vickers-Supermarine Spitfire and Seafire aircraft built.
There is no shortage of publications relating to the Spitfire. However I have been constantly struck by the number of errors contained in books and websites, principally as a result of authors copying details from other publications rather than carrying out original research.
The number of errors contained in official records mean that no definitive record can be produced. However I have carried out significant original research, principally at the Public Records Office, RAF Museum, and Cambridge University library, in order to produce as accurate record as possible. I have reconciled Supermarine records to those of the Ministry of Aircraft production, and also produced reconciliations which identify the main errors contained in other publications.
It is hoped that this website can provide a useful resource for researchers and modellers. In order to improve the accuracy of this site please contact me to highlight any errors or inconsistencies.
Production
The Production lists detail the history of every Spitfire and Seafire ever built. Production is listed in serial number order and identifies the mark, contract, factory, engine, major squadrons and units, and fate. An analysis by mark is provided. The data can be downloaded either as a text file, as a compressed .zip file, or browsed on-line. |
Contracts
The Contract section lists each of the orders and amendments against each Spitfire contract. Common errors and inconsistencies are listed in the Reconciliations section which lists the errors and inconsistencies between the principal published sources of information on the Spitfire and attempts to provide a definitive resolution. |
Abbreviations and Sources The Abbreviations section provides a glossary of terms and common abbreviations used in the production lists. The Sources section provides a list of reference sources and materials. |
Notes
The Notes detail various issues surrounding the production of the Spitfire and lists outstanding queries. |
Units
The Units section lists all the RAF squadrons and other units which operated the Spitfire and Seafire, together with overseas air forces. |
